This one-on-one course will show you how to use various types of what are called CMS (Content Management Systems) as the structure on which to build your websites. CMS are designed to simplify the publication of Web content to Web sites, in particular allowing content creators to publish content without requiring technical knowledge of HTML, PHP or other code.

CMS are open source applications, which are community created and maintained. They are free to download and may be modified as the user sees fit. The website you build on that CMS is yours to keep. 

Course Details:

You now have, literally at your finger-tips, the ability to create and manage an unlimited number of completely professional web sites, your single cost being your monthly web host fee.  During this course we will work side-by-side to create your fully interactive web site directly on to your own personal laptop computer. In doing so, you will also learn what you need to know to maintain your site, add to it and even create new sites. You will be given access to your own online cPanel (a control panel that provides a graphical interface designed to simplify the process of hosting web sites) from which you can generate your websites.

This is a hands-on course, the objective of which is to give you a basic understanding of how to build your own CMS websites and how to access those websites online so that you can update them, add new pages and even build brand new sites as you master the web authoring tools provided. Additionally, we will discuss other important topics that include the following:

  • Making your site Google-Friendly: Where Google goes the others will follow!
  • SEO (Search engine optimization) Build your website to be found!
  • Online Promotion: A slew of ways to promote your sites for Free!

Your website that we will create in class together, which is yours to keep, will be built on your own laptop computer. It is therefore necessary that you are able to bring your own laptop computer to the classroom. This will also allow us to more easily and efficiently create an area within your computer that houses a copy of your website, your design programs, important links, images etc. In this manner, what you learn in class and the area within which you were working will travel with you when you go.

The classroom environment is comfortable and casual, rather than strictly classroom. The course is 15-hours in duration, spread over 4 days so as not to overload you with information. This will also allow you the time to reflect between classes and even work on your site, if you are so inclined.

The bulk of Tim's web creation and promotional know-how comes from hard-earned personal experience. As an owner of numerous small businesses over the years he has learned that the advertising and web design "trap" can do as much to put you out of business financially as help your business grow. Beginning with his first e-commerce web site in the late 1990's, he began to compile a working knowledge of the tools available online that can free the small business owner from those costly hazards, allowing for a more effective, efficient and economic online business. A glass artist by trade, Tim uses his self-promotional program to take ideas from conception to sale all in one day.

Special Instruction:

This course is taught using a laptop computer and image projector. It is mandatory that you bring your laptop computer to class as we will be creating your website directly onto your computer prior to uploading it.

Prior to our first class together, please have in mind what domain name you would like for your website. Google also looks at the individual words within a domain name so you might want it to be reflective of the general theme of your site. For example: www.BobsHouseOfCats.com might be a good domain name for Bob if he were selling cats. Of course your preferred domain might not be available but generally we would be able to create something similar. Also, if you are planning on creating and even hosting a number of websites yourself, you may want to consider something more appropriate such as www.MyOwnHostCompany.com.
